So what is Banyan Coaching?
Banyan Coaching is a 10-week 1-on-1 process to develop a sustainable and successful development and communications program for the small nonprofit team. So often in small teams, everyone owns some part of fundraising and communications, which can mean… no one owns fundraising and communications. Through the coaching process, we work together to assess what is and isn’t working with your current strategies, dive deep to understand where you are trying to go and why, and develop a 1-year plan that will set you on track to get there. At the end of the coaching program you’ll walk away not only with your current year plan, but templates so you can revisit and revise your strategies, plans and goals each year going forward.
Throughout the 10-week program, we’ll cover the following areas of fundraising and communications:
Why 10 weeks?
This answer has two parts: first, ten weeks gives us enough time to walk through the whole process – from understanding where you’re currently at and the processes you have in place, to planning your next year, and resolving the operational issues that we find in the first phase of our work so you aren’t held back going forward. Secondly, the longer time frame allows for the random little “questions” that inevitably arise in any fundraiser’s work to come up naturally. And during our weekly check-in calls, you’ll have the opportunity to get these resolved! By working and learning and pivoting in real time, we’ll be able to test and assess as we go, providing you an even better product at the end of the ten weeks.
Why small nonprofits?
Because it’s what I know! And because I – for better or worse – built my career in nonprofits that could have always used an extra set of hands or extra couple of days in the week. The Banyan process is specifically designed for the team that doesn’t have separate departments or teams to deep dive into one function area. We create a customized plan for your organization that addresses your need for both funding and communicating your message – but we do it in a way that is realistic for the size of the team you have on hand.
This may be a stupid question…. But am I a “small” nonprofit?
No stupid questions! How do we define “small” here at Banyan? Any organization where one person or one team is responsible for leading the bulk of development and communications for the organization as a whole. How do we not define small? Budget size. I personally worked at an organization with a budget of $20 million annually where I was the only employee focused on communications and fundraising. The point here is, every organization is different. If the services we offer sound like they may fit for you but aren’t sure, please reach out and we can discuss!
Can my teammates participate in the coaching process?
At specific points of the program, we do involve individuals from across the organization (staff, board, volunteers, etc). However, the weekly 1-on-1 sessions are for the lead team member (usually the Executive Director). This team member will be the main point of contact throughout the program and will have various tasks to complete in between calls each week.
Who is the coaching program meant for?
This coaching process is meant for the decision maker for fundraising and communications of the organization. Most often this is the Executive Director, but it may be another Director-level role. If you have questions about whether it is right for your organization, reach out and let’s talk!
What is the time commitment?
The time commitment for the lead team member will be most extensive in the weeks leading up to the program when gathering materials for the initial review. Throughout the ten weeks, the time commitment will be 1 – 3 hours per week (including the weekly 1 hour call).
What is the cost investment?
The 10-week program is an organizational investment of $2,975. Payment plans based on milestones within the project are available, so please reach out and we are happy to discuss this with you!
